Wonderful Machine
Date: 2006-03-11 | Rating: 5
I like to enjoy a capuccino every morning, but I was a bit tired of the process of griding the beans, tamping, frothing, cleaning up, etc. Also in an effort to save time, I decided to research a super autmoatic machine. I wanted a quality machine that would froth milk for me, but I was not impressed with the Jura Capresso machines because they require extensive clean up and are, in my opinion, grossly overpriced. My previous espresso machine was a Delonghi, and I was impressed by the quality of the machine and the espresso it produced. The EAM3500's automatic frothing mechanism was its main selling point. I was a bit hesitant about the price and longevity of the machine, but decided to go for it... I am happy that I did. The espresso is wonderful, and the fothing mechanism is great. Clean-up is, no exaggeration, takes a few seconds before the milk jug may be returned to the fridge. Frothed milk could be a bit hotter, but it's definitely tolerable. The boiler is easy to clean (unlike Jura Capressos), and the bright LCD lets you know everything that the machine requires. I have already descaled once (before I switched to distilled water), and it was a snap. Overall, I have owned the machine for 1.5 months, and it's the best. I never cease to be amazed every morning when I wake up -- the machine is already on and warmed up, and a delicious cappucino is a push of a button and thirty seconds away. I highly recommend this machine. The only bad experience that I had was when I tried to obtain a second water hardness testing strip. This piece of paper that comes with the machine is easy to lose, and when I called for another, Delonghi wanted to charge me $15... for a piece of paper! I decided to use distilled water (better for the machine anyway) and set the water hardness to its lowest level. --- UPDATE: 12/05/07 --- I have to say that I am still extremely pleased with this machine. The seals for the milk jug have done bad, but Delonghi customer service has been wonderful; they have furnished new seals and a new top. At the same time, I bought a second machine shortly after the first, and the second machine has been a nightmare. It has been "fixed" twice, and it can still be spotty for a few days (no froth or a cold espresso). This machine must be cleaned and used with care to assure longevity.

Robust for even a small company
Date: 2006-10-05 | Rating: 5
This machine has now been going strong in the breakroom of my 100 person company for more than 9 months. Ever since we got the machine, people have drastically reduced making their trips to nearby Starbucks. Everybody loves the machine because of its simplicity and ease of use. Lot of people just use the frothed milk only feature as well. The cleaning is simple as well. The only note of caution is that for lattes or cappucinos (i.e., when you use frothed or steamed milk), the drink does not come out too hot. You can adjust the temperature of the coffee by making a few settings, and the temperature is fine for normal use, but still you can not get an extra hot latte. At times when I want that, I just put my coffee filled cup in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and the problem is solved. I would also like to recommend people to set the appropriate hardness level using the test described in the manual. I did not do that at first and ended up decalcifying far too often. Also do not use warm water wherever possible. Bottomline, this is a highly recommended super automatic espresso machine for not just residences but even small companies.

Better than Starbuck's
Date: 2006-10-07 | Rating: 5
This machine is really just as advertised - one touch capuccino and espresso with enormous customization. You can adjust the coffee strength independent of the volume (ristretto to lungo). The milk frother works wonderfully with good tight foam, and is mixed with the coffee in the cup in perfect ratio. It produces capuccino just as good as Starbucks (assuming you use Starbucks beans), and more consistent (sometimes, depending on the barista, the capuccino can be weaker or stronger based on the amount of milk added). I've had the machine for several months and have no complaints at all. The only minimal negatives I can think of is that I would like to have a somewhat larger bean hopper and water tank. The infuser is made of plastic, so I had some concerns about longevity, but when you take it out to clean it you can see that it is very thick solid plastic. Given than this machine costs only $1500 vs. more than double that for any more solidly constructed machine, and this was definitely the way to go.

We love this machine!

We purchased the DeLonghi EAM3500 Magnifica for our second home and we enjoy the taste of the coffee, latte, etc so much we're ordering another for our main residence. So simple to use - very easy to keep clean. The machine grinds the coffee just before brewing - wonderful. We've also been pleased with the milk attachment for latte and cappuccino - no more standing at the machine frothing milk. The only thing we would change would be to add separate holders for multiple types of beans - but I'm sure we could get that if we bought one of the much more expensive "commercial" machines! Overall, we are VERY happy with the EAM3500.

superior machine
Date: 2008-03-27 | Rating: 5
For all who have been stressed by the quirks of the 3300, Delonghi has made some improvements in this generation. The grinder is much quieter, the infusion cycle proofs the grounds before brewing, and there's an automatic rinse cycle at shut down. The digital programability is nice, but I bought this machine for the end product: great coffee. I was not disappointed. Some things to remember: 1. Use the least oily beans you can find. French roast will clog the machine quickly. I'm using a local med-dark roast all arabica coffee. Lavazza super crema is also very good. 2. Rinse between shots because the infuser clogs easily with black espresso muck. Not rinsing will cause the machine to shut down with a message that the "grind is too fine". 3. Believe the instructions and play with grinder settings. I had to go all the way up to a "5" [semi coarse] grind. The new manual is much better written. 4. The normal strength delivers thick, deep, well carmelized crema. You can taste the different nuances between blends. For example, the winey character of central american beans or the earthy taste of sumatran come through. The "strong" setting uses a lot of coffee, and doesn't result in a significantly different brew. 5. The steam is very powerful and prepares great quality froth quickly. 6. Use the "extra hot" setting. Delonghi has solved the cold problem that some past reviewers have complained about. I demo'd a saeco talia giro before buying this machine. The saeco does make excellent espresso, but lacks the LCD display that tells you what's wrong. All it has is a flashing "idiot" light that can mean several things: low water, empty grounds, fill beans, clean the infuser, etc. Both machines have plastic infuser assemblies, and I wonder how disasterous a drop to the floor might be. Otherwise, a fabulous machine!

Amazon.com Review
Both a regular coffeemaker and espresso machine, this 1,500-watt appliance has separate water tanks for simultaneously brewing drip coffee and espresso. The espresso machine side has a milk frother for creating cappuccinos and lattes. Separate knobs select the strength of both regular coffee and espresso. Making espresso follows tradition: tamp coffee into a filter basket inside a filter holder, twist the filter holder onto the machine, pour water into the machine's boiler, and press a button. Depending on the amount of water, up to four 2-ounce cups then flow into an 8-ounce glass carafe. Making regular coffee also follows tradition: put a filter in the filter basket, spoon in coffee, add water to the coffeemaker's removable tank, and press a button. Up to ten 5-ounce cups of coffee then flow into a 50-ounce glass carafe on a warming plate. (For five and fewer cups, the brewing process can be sped up to provide full flavor.) The brewing process pauses if the carafe is removed from the warming plate for a mid-brew pour. Encased in both bright and matte-finish black plastic, the machine measures 16 inches wide, 13-1/2 inches high, and 9 inches deep and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

Great value for the cost
Date: 2002-12-02 | Rating: 5
Our teenage son worked in a cafe' for the summer running a major multi-thousand dollar machine, and became a self-styled expert. This machine is as much as we were willing to spring for as a gift, and it's been non-stop espresso, latte & whatever for 48 hours. He's extremely pleased, which says something to us about the machine. He's found no fault with it after testing all the features...

It delivers on its promises! Awesome machine
Date: 2003-05-04 | Rating: 5
What a superb machine this is. It delivers on its promises! We admit to being well traveled coffee aficionados, who grind our own coffee, and appreciate a fine machine that creates the coffee one will find in France, Italy, Greece as well as the best food cities here in the states (NYC, New Orleans, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami). And what a versatile and easy to use machine this is and for the price a real gem.We like the black colour as well as the ease of use. The water container lifts out so easily for filling with easy to read measuring levels in large print. The buttons are elegantly designed and labeled for easy reading even in poor light or when not quit awake in the wee hours of the morning. Which is handy when one has odd hours. The carafe is beautiful and looks classy enough for ones dining table. The only suggestion I have is buy a second carafe so that one pot can be brewing as the other is being used. This is a machine we will also be giving as a gift. And talk about a machine that makes an awesome Espresso or Cappuccino. WOW !

Great Coffee and Lattes
Date: 2004-07-14 | Rating: 5
After a couple weeks of use, I'm very impressed with this. The coffee maker makes great coffee (water brews at proper temp.) and has the tapered-style filter, which helps quality, especially when making less than a full pot. Does NOT have auto-off feature. The Espresso side of the unit is equally impressive. It offers good control of water flow rate, or the water can be turned off while steaming milk. Does NOT come with a frothing pitcher, so consider one of these as well as a thermometer (unless you have a calibrated finger to hold to the side of your frothing pitcher).

I really like this machine!
Date: 2007-05-30 | Rating: 5
I think it is a shame that this coffee maker is getting such poor reviews. This is a good machine that does what it is supposed to do. I have been using this machine daily for two months and have no complaints. The Brewed coffee is excellent, even in small batches, and the expresso maker does a terrific job. At $50 you can't find a better deal then this machine.

DeLonghi Listened
Date: 2009-02-15 | Rating: 5
I am happy to say this company listened to the consumer. They have fixed the caraffe that dripped so badly. This coffee pot is great! My original coffee pot was purchased for me 6 years ago. The heating element finally went out. I purchased a less expensive one and hated it. I bought a new one of these and discovered that DeLonghi listened. On the steamer side I heat my water to use as steam for hot cocoa or a latte and can use it as I need to. It does not drip out as the water does in cheaper models. This is one product that you definitely get what you pay for. I can say 6 months of the local coffee shop costs will be saved if you buy this and use it at home.

Great Machine!
Date: 2009-08-05 | Rating: 5
I am surprised that I am the first reviewer of this great machine. I just received mine yesterday. I bought it from another vender, but since I typically do most of my shopping via Amazon I thought I would share my experience thus far. Overall, this Super-Automatic is simple to use and makes great coffee, lattes, and cappuccino's. My advice though....WATCH THE DVD BEFORE USING!!! I thought I had this thing in the bag.. how difficult could it be to use??....Well it isn't difficult to use, but there are a few things I did that had I watched the video all the way through I would not have done. For example, when setting how fine or coarse you want the beans you have to adjust the dial one notch at a time while the grinder is running (still doesn't make sense to me). I paused the video before waiting for the lady to finish talking on the topic and just moved it a few notches towards fine...oops! Oh well, doesn't seem to have adversely effected anything, but now I know. Contrary to reviews I have read of super-auto's, the burr grinder on this one is quiet when running. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 is extremely loud and 1 is basically silent I would rate this machine a 5 and my Cuisinart Grind and brew (the one that hold like a pound of beans) an 8. I was actually expecting something much louder. Build Quality- I would have to say I am impressed with the looks of this machine and its fit and finish. I am sure some people will complain of the amount of plastic, but seeing how this thing already weighs over 20lbs. why add more weight. I thought about the Gran Dama, but honestly this machine is better. Coffee- I was also considering the Jura Z5 because I read good things, but the price was a stretch. Granted, this machine isn't cheap either. I believe that I made the right choice. The espresso is great. I do wonder though what it tasted like from the factory, but since I changed the settings prematurely I will never know...ha! The Milk pitcher is ingenious...BRAVO! Latte's and Cappuccino's are a breeze and let me tell you this machine makes both very well. Sure a semi-auto can do better, but really I do not want to do the extra steps. As it is, Starbucks does not compare. I have read reviews that state the Gran Dama latte's can be cold. I have to admit, the first one I made was, but after I made a couple and utilized the cup warmer they were perfect. I bought the Cinnamon Dolce syrup from Starbucks and I downed to many lattes....probably explains why at 0209 EST I am still up and writing this review. My Opinion- If you are in the market for a super-automatic I would say give this one a consideration. I bought this machine from a place that has probably the best return policy of all retailers, so if something does go wrong I will take it right back for another. Regardless, the people at Delonghi are great and I was amazed that as soon as I pushed (1) I was talking to a person almost immediately. I will probably just purchase the extended warranty from the manufacturer and extend the 2 years to 4...Extra $150. That is all for now. Look for an update in a couple months.

Excellent espresso machine for your home or office
Date: 2007-06-13 | Rating: 5
My wife-to-be and I wanted to start making our favorite espresso drinks at home since buying them each morning from Starbucks made us feel guilty (spending $8/day on coffee = $240/month or $2,880/year ). So we started looking into getting an espresso machine and a nice burr grinder for our home. Since I had worked as the manager of a trendy coffee shop/Bar/Restaurant when I was in college, I was already a skilled Barista. As part of that job I also had to read up on coffee types and the various ways to properly prepare it. This really came in handy as we began to research a massive variety of espresso machines. One thing you will quickly find out is you can't be stingy when it comes to spending cash on your machine (but think of the money you can save by making your own). So I was prepared to spend around $350 for our new machine and I seriously considered the starbucks barista model machine (in that price range). But then we came across the De'Longhi EC-460. The machine didn't have very many reviews but it did have good specs, good looks, and the few reviews I could find were very positive. So we gave it a try. Wow are we glad we did. This machine is awesome all around. It's got great looks (looks far better then models which cost 2x as much). It's got the cup warmer on the top, and an easily washable/removable water reservoir. This machine is ideal for making two beverages at a time (if you need any more than that and will need to make them in a second run). What I mean is that frothing/steaming milk for more than two beverages at a given time won't work very well in this machine so you will have to make your drinks in no more than groups of two's. The machine has excellent components (lots of power) and pulls an awesome shot (with perfect crema). And the steam wand heats fast and is extremely effective (great micro-foam). This machine is quality any way you look at it (without taking the price into consideration). Once you take a look at the price-tag for this machine you find that it's down right amazing. If you are looking for an affordable, quality machine (with really great style) to make tasty espresso at home...I would highly recommend you select this machine (EC-460 model).

Just what I wanted in an espresso machine!
Date: 2008-11-12 | Rating: 5
After much research, I decided to get the DeLonghi EC460 machine, and am not disappointed. Superb craftsmanship, quick start-up, ease of use, and nice crema made this a winner. I do pre-heat the cups and collection mug in a microwave before filling the mug, just so it will all be warm enough. My mocha is now as good as the $4 ones I use to buy at You-Know-Where. I also recommend buying a Terry's Tamper and a 1-cup pyrex mug to get you going.

Delonghi EC460

A great espresso maker for the price. The espresso has lots of crema, the milk gets really frothy. Its a pump-driven system and makes a latte that comes pretty close to one made on a coffee house machine.

Superb - Like most highend devices, it needs TLC
Date: 2007-11-26 | Rating: 5
First of all, this machine is physically superior to all other super-automatic brands I checked out. The top line Jura, Saeco, and Krups are all wrapped in plastic with steel accents in front while the Delonghi is fully encased in steel. The engineering is very solid and it has a gorgeous presence in the kitchen. If you like Cappuccino, you will love this machine and its truly one touch operation. However, you must use proper sized Cappuccino cups to get the full experience. The machine is tuned to froth the milk and add the espresso shot so that froth extends about 1/4 inch above the edge of the cup. You can change these settings, but out-of-the-box it is perfect. I have never had a better Cappuccino anywhere - even Italy. (I use Illy medium roast beans). The milk container is incredibly convenient. I have placed the machine near my fridge so I simply store the milk container in the fridge after each use. It snaps in and out of place very easily. The espresso shots are wonderful. It is important that you take note of the grind setting when you open the box before you change it. They set the grind setting at the factory for each machine and it is unlikely that you will find a better mark. People say that super-automatics can't make a shot as good as the manual machines but think this machine defies that rule. To really enjoy and understand this machine, you need to read the manual and take some simple extra steps before and after you use it each day. First of all, use the rinse feature often. It takes 1/2 second to push the button. If the machine has been sitting for a while, hit rinse before you use it so the infuser will heat up. After your last cup for the morning etc, hit rinse. It is a quick and simple way to keep the machine working well. Second, before and after you use the milk container, hold the CLEAN button for 5 seconds. It blasts steam through the internal parts that transport the milk. There is no other way to clean the milk that enters the machine. If you don't do this, the milk will harden in the machine and cause problems. You do not need to CLEAN after every cup, just when you are finished for that period of the day. Again, it is quick and simple and makes a big difference. Finally, prep your machine based on your usage. Don't let the machine tell you to empty the container, fill the beans, or fill the water. Get ahead of it so that your coffee making sessions are not interrupted by these messages. Once every day or so, depending on usage, just check everything before you start so you don't waste time or coffee. Here is an important point. If you are drinking alone, this super- automatic is as much work or more than a manual machine. You need to prep and clean it more than a manual machine. The super-automatic only pays off in terms of convenience when you make the second cup and beyond. With this machine, you can just hit CAPPUCCINO 10 times in a row and you will have 10 cups - it's that simple. But after 14 cups you refil the water, empty the grounds container, top off the beans, clean the milk and rinse the infuser. To me, its all worth it because it makes a great cup of coffee and it is just so damn cool. In summary, I am so pleased with this product that I was motivated to write this review. What else can I say?

Great Espresso!
Date: 2007-10-16 | Rating: 5
I have used a manual espresso machine for many years and now that I have a super automatic I will never go back. This thing is a technical marvel that is completely programmable to make perfect latte's or cappuccino's just the way I like them. One of the best features is the detachable milk container that has an automatic cleaning function so it can go righ back in the fridge. I also like the easily removeable brewing system that can be taken out for cleaning. One touch brewing for all my favorite drinks what a treat.

Mostly Automatic Espresso Machine

I am a bit of a coffee snob and always wanted a high powered espresso machine, but my wife was put-off by the complexity of the commercial machines. We bought the Gran Dama because it is so automatic that making great latte and cappuccino is now a breeze for her and I love the real espresso taste. The instructional DVD and intuitive programming got us off to a fast start. Watching the DVD a couple of times before plugging in machine helps set-up go smoothly. Like any espresso machine this requires some maintenance. However, even the maintenance is semi-automatic. There is a message to fill the water tank, add beans and empty the grounds. I have already gotten in the habit of doing all that and emptying the catch tray when the "fill tank." message comes on. It automatically goes into a rinsing cycle when its turned off/on. It's also recommended to push the rinse cycle button after several consecutive uses. There isn't any message to clean the steam/milk nozzle on the milk tank, but all you have to do is hold the CLEAN button on the tank down for several seconds and you're done. The milk can dry hard as concrete onto any steam nozzle, so I recommend cleaning it after every use to avoid problems. Don't be put-off by the maintenance, it's easy and you won't even get your hands dirty. There are a couple small things that could be improved. The height under the espresso nozzles is about 3" and tall cups or glasses can't be used. So we bought a 12 ounce stainless pitcher to catch and transfer drinks. The other nuisance is connecting the milk tank can become difficult. It occasionally requires a detailed cleaning and I use a little canola oil to lube the connections. We highly recommend the Gran Dama to anyone who wants real espresso/milk flavor without all the hassle. It is worth every penny.

Worth Every Penny

I had to grit my teeth to spend this much on a an Espresso machine but it has been worth every penny. I have only been using it for a couple of weeks so I can't comment on how reliable it is but my machine is working perfectly. It took a little experimentation to find the right coffee to meet my expectations. I lived in Italy and want something that comes close to my favorite Pasticerria coffee. I like that I can alter the amount of milk added to each kind of coffee and of course, it's awesome that latte, cappuccino, macchiato and espresso are available at the touch of a button. The machine heats up quickly and since you get coffee and milk at the same time, both are hot unlike my old machine where I could brew the coffee and then had to wait for the water to reheat before I could steam the milk. I love that I never have to wait for the pressure to release before removing the grounds holder again. I used to have to wait five minutes or more before brewing another cup but the Gran Dama empties the grounds and reheats in seconds. The machine is easy to clean which is a plus. It comes apart easily and reassembles with no effort. I read the directions carefully and watched the DVD that came with it and was making coffee in a few minutes. I have only found two drawbacks so far. When I use ground coffee I get the "add grounds" message even after adding the measure of grounds. I have to add more than one scoop to get rid of the message and at one point it stopped and told me to remove coffee before it would brew. I don't really care because I will use beans and not grounds from now on. The other issue is that you must always ensure there is water in the tank and milk in the container before starting. If you don't, it will start to brew and then stop. The machine steamed the milk and delivered it and then told me to fill the tank with water because I failed to notice it was low. Apparently you can't just add water and continue, but must start over, wasting the already steamed milk. I'll just have to be careful to check the levels before brewing. Otherwise, it makes a superb coffee, very quickly, with no work. I can have delicious cappuccino whenever I want and it tastes better than Starbucks! The machine looks good, very impressive. I am very satisfied with this espresso machine.

The coffee beast

I have owned a run of the mill krups coffee maker forever. It refused to die. I could not imagine spending thousands for a coffee machine but my wife really wanted to get me something special for father's day. I did a fairly compulsive online review but it was not until I saw the Grand Dama up close and personal that I made up my mind. It's a beautiful piece of kitchen sculpture. Now came the test, would it work? I knew going into this that all of the machines are surprisingly hit or miss and we were talking Italian engineering! Well the dvd would not play in my player, bad start, but it ran fine in my MAC. The video was easy to follow and the written instructions were also easy. It worked first time and every time since and I am in love! so is my wife and so are my teenagers the Grand Dame's (sic) a real hit. Like the previous reviewer, I've found a little lubrication is the secret to happiness. I've also figured out how to get hot frothed milk for hot chocolate, etc. Run the machine on the manual grounds setting, push latte or capacino and don't add coffee...voila hot frothed milk. This thing is virtually the same total work per 8 cups as a drip maker and 1000 times better. Put's the local starbucks and caribou to shame.

Simple and flexible - makes fantastic espresso
Date: 2009-04-09 | Rating: 5
Not purchased via Amazon or this seller - this is just a review of the machine. I used to use the Breville Die Cast Espresso machine, and I actually loved it. It made good, consistent espresso (once you figured out the nuances). But it was ultimately the nuances and the manual operation that led me to seek out a good super-automatic machine. DeLonghi was at the top of my list because of a friend of mine who owned one (this exact model, actually). He spoke highly of it, being a pretty serious coffee drinker himself. I have found that the machine has lived up to the expectations he set. The setup was very simple - the LCD display guides you through the process (supplementing the manual, of course). Starting with all of the default settings for water temperature, grind size, and shot volume, even the very first shot from the machine was good (though the manual warns you may not be satisfied until it has produced 4 or 5). I have been increasingly impressed as I've pulled a few more shots (though probably less than 20 so far) The automatic timer allows the machine to turn on and warm up at a pre-determined time. So if your morning routine is pretty consistent, you can typically walk straight up to the machine and press a button, and enjoy your coffee 30 seconds later. I've seen people complain that it doesn't automatically make the shot, but this wouldn't be possible considering how the machine works. Before you can pull a shot, it pre-rinses the internal plumbing to ensure that only fresh, hot water is used for the first shot. You wouldn't want that water in your espresso :) I can't really review the steam wand's operation - I've only used it to add hot water to make an Americano (which worked well). Cleanup is ridiculously easy. The machine tells you that it needs to be cleaned, which requires you to - Move the steam wand aside - Open the door - Remove the drip tray and waste bin together - Dump and clean both the drip tray and waste bin - Re-assemble It takes like 5 minutes, and you do it once every few days. I believe they quote you 14 shots, more or less. Overall, I haven't found a single flaw in this machine yet. I'm very impressed.

the one to get

I agree with the other reviews. I have two of these, a his and hers. We drink a lot of espresso, and had an earlier model that developed a leak at the steam valve. We have had several of the Jura machines, which had short lives and were not easily user serviceable. The coffee from them wasn't as hot and they were more expensive. And that's the real beauty of the DeLonghis. Turn the unit off but still plugged in, open the door and squeeze the two red buttons, out comes the brewunit. So easy! Rinse it with your fingers and pop it back in. Clean everything every couple of weeks and it gives beautiful hot pulls with great crema

Best Espresso Machine!

I had used a couple of smaller Espresso machines that were manual operation. Nothing too fancy, but they were pump driven at least. After my last one broke quickly I decided to seek out a very nice machine. I figured if I was going to get a machine that I should step it up to a Super Automatic Machine. It became quite tiresome to keep emptying, grinding coffee, adding and tamping when trying to create a venti iced doubleshot at home. I found this machine and I must say I am so impressed with it. It's quality is quite amazing. The espresso it produces is incredible. Clean up is easy and maintenance is simple. The wand works extremely well and steams milk to 160 Degrees quite quickly. It's also super easy to clean up the wand. It comes apart and allows you to clean it with just a simple wipe down. The machines I have had before you had to really put some elbow grease in because the milk would cake on it. This machine definitely carries a premium pricetag, but it is a premium machine of high quality. It is absolutely worth it if you are a cafe enthusiast.

Great espresso for anyone

After about 10 years using a LaPavoni lever machine I tired of the routine and decided to get a superautomatic. When I first used the Delonghi 4400 I thought I had made a major mistake. However after making adjustments on the grinder and the water volumes it makes wonderful espresso with more crema than I ever got before. My only concern was the steam wand that froths the milk so fast it does not get hot enough. But I found that putting my finger on the air hole on the wand allows it to heat the milk without frothing and then releasing it results in nice hot microfoam. Still it would be nice if they offered an optional commercial wand like that on the LaPavoni Europiccolo that makes excellent microfoam and is easily wiped clean. Everything else about this machine cannot be beat. It is amazing to watch it grind, tamp, make a perfect double shot and dump the grinds at the touch of a button.

Very, very good so far
Date: 2009-11-29 | Rating: 5
We're at the 24hr point with this model and have about a dozen espresso's and a couple latte's under our belt and we are very happy with the initial start up and performance of the machine. Within about 5 min we were pulling our first espresso's and after a few to break in the machine, we tried espresso's made on the "strong" setting and they were very good made using Starbucks beans. Next we went through the instructions to steam milk and our first forays lead us to a quick and seemingly inexhaustable amount of good, dry steam and was able to heat milk nicely to 160F. Cleanup included rinsing the quick-detach steaming wand and having a cup under the espresso spouts while the rinse water comes out after turning the machine off. More in-depth, periodic cleaning involves emptying the ground container and rinsing and drying the bottom tray. Everyone finds their own comfort zone for cleaning, but for the 1 min it took to do the "total cleanout", we'll be doing that every time. Instructions come in the form a dvd, picture guide, and text. Very easy to start up and run. Only things I would change so far would be the length from the body of the machine that the steam wand/arm swings. A little close for steaming the larger frothing pitchers out there. No problems for 20oz and smaller. I'll post an update after a few months, but this looks like a machine we'll be very pleased with.

Fantastic Machine - Great Coffee!
Date: 2008-07-23 | Rating: 5
Since my last comment a year ago I have moved to the US and due to voltage have been forced to buy a new machine. Purchased exactly the same one and continue to be just as satisfied as with the first one. Paid the price - but having said that I see that costs are falling here. The new machine operates as consistently and well as the first. Recommendation therefore remains the same! We bought this machine a month and a half ago with great anticipation since we experienced Nespresso several times before. Since we are fans of cappuccinos, Lattes and Macchiato's this machine seemed to answer our needs. It did and in spades. Everything the machine is expected to do it does. I read other reviews but have not experienced any of the issues mentioned. The milk froth is fine, even adjustable. I prime/clean the spout after every session to make sure all is clear. Since you can adjust the quantities I was able to play around (drinking much coffee, strong and weak) before finding my 'eureka!'. It's simply the most easy coffee machine to use, with fantastic results. As for temperature of the coffee - I also felt sometimes the coffee wasn't warm enough but after running my cappuccino mug under hot water before making the coffee for a moment this was no longer an issue. We've had friends with typical home version espresso machines that just sit there until there is a special occasion because it's just too much trouble - this machine has easily become an everyday machine for us since we got it, which is what I think Nespresso/Delonghi intended. PROS: great coffee, many choices (even the short intense blends work in cappuccinos or long (luongo) coffees, space for taller glasses/cups for milk coffees, EASE OF USE! CONS: price (pretty steep in the US - I bought mine in Switzerland for US$500) but for the ease of use it's worth it, the space for taller cups is relatively narrow so you need to find ones that will fit (your usual huge Starbucks mug won't cut it here).

Say goodbye to your favorite coffee shop!

I have only had the Lattissima for few days for its a stunning machine. By far the simplest, best desinged auto machine out there. Pros: compact, easy to use, well designed, great coffee, speed of use, ease of cleanup, etc Cons: non except cost. But do the math, my coffee habit equated apx $2700/year at a hi end coffee retailer, this option is much cheaper and works amazing. The milk frother compartment is really great, store it in the fridge, pull it out when you want to use it, hit the one button Latte maker, but unused milk container back in fridge for next use, wicked!

Great tasting coffee, now if they could only package it green...

I received this product for Christmas and love it. The coffee is outstanding but I agree with other reviews I have read - they need to figure out a way to make the pods more environmentally friendly. The Nespresso is easy to use and easy to clean. It makes lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, and lungos with one push of a button. You can easily control the amount of foam on milk drinks and can even make a wonderful hot chocolate for the kids by using their favorite mix and leaving out the coffee pod.

Easy & Delicious
Date: 2010-01-31 | Rating: 4
I went through about 5 different machines, including much more expensive ones, before settling on the Nespresso / DeLonghi EN660. I got it in red because at the time the red one was $100 cheaper than the black one. The black and red models are identical. The stainless steel version is $100 more, and has a stronger heating element in the top, so if you store cups on the top they will be much warmer than with the red or black version. Other than that, there is no functional difference between the stainless steel version and the black/red version. I have had this machines for about 6 months now, and I absolutely love it. The coffee is delicious, and there's virtually no cleanup. I can quickly make complicated drinks. I especially love the fact that it automatically dispenses the milk when making milk-based coffee drinks. I have found over time that this machine is very reliable, but there a few tricks/tips to make sure the milk froths properly: 1. The machine says it's ready to make milk froth too quickly. Frequently, if I make a latte as soon as the machine stops blinking and is ready to go, the milk isn't frothed enough. If I wait another 10 minutes or so, the machine is hot enough and the milk froths more fully. 2.If milk isn't frothing enough, the parts in the milk container may need a good washing. I find that I need to put the milk container and parts in the dish washer once a week. If frothing starts going down hill, it's time for a visit to the dishwasher I would definitely buy this machine again. The Nespresso coffee tastes great, and it's super easy to use. Cleanup is just a matter of pressing the steam button for 10 seconds, and wiping the nozzle and steam wand with a damp paper towel.

For the cost I returned the machine because I could not get a hot enough ending product when using the milk attachment. The milk would be about 126to130F so when you added it to your espresso it cooled everything down to much. I want a hot out the door not cold in two minutes drink. I thought I could heat it up again but why should I have to for the big bucks I paid. The pods are good tasting. That part was great.

Expensive, but worth it
Date: 2009-02-03 | Rating: 4
We just got this machine over the holidays and have been more than impressed. In fact, we're down-right addicted to it. It truly is very easy to use and makes great espressos, lattes and cappuccinos (kudos to Nespresso for excellent pod quality). Has completely replaced Starbucks for us, which has resulted in big savings and convenience. Also perfect for dinner parties, where we can make drink after drink after drink with practically no effort. The only issues I've found is that it does drip a little after making drinks, which leads to some clean-up, but pretty minor. And, those pod costs do add up, but that's the case with any machine and still a fraction of what you would pay at Starbucks. Others have complained about the temperature of the drinks, and it is a little cooler than I would like for the first drink. However, I found that running the "clean" mode on the milk container before making the drinks helps heat up the tubes and makes for hotter initial drink. Also, quickly preheating the cup with hot water helps. All this takes about 12 seconds. Once you're past the first, it's fine. One hint on the milk, we've found that using 2% "pasteurized" instead of "ultra-pasteurized" gives a better, thicker foam. Only reason why four stars instead of five is the initial machine cost and ongoing pod cost.

True COFFEE lover
Date: 2007-05-17 | Rating: 5
I received this coffee machine as a gift after moving cross country. I drink espresso/cappucino daily and drip coffee only occasionally, and I really loved my friend's Caffe Nabucco machine of the same brand. I love this gift. It is a coffee center, giving me several options for my own coffee needs (I like my coffee better than all those other coffee shops.) The frother is a nice addition, although it isn't practical if you are in a rush - it needs immediate cleaning. The drip side - and the programmable timer - is an improvement over the previous model and really handy. I use it daily and have not had one problem in three months with any part of the machine.

Digital DeLonghi BCO120T Used For Six Years

There is more than one model of the DeLonghi line of Coffee/Espresso Machines. I have owned 2 of the Delonghi Combos. I have read the reviews and have concluded that most of the negative remarks come form those that do not know how to use it or have the model that are not digital. We have enjoyed cappuccino, for almost every day, for the last six years. I suggest 100% Columbian coffee and second I suggest to use nothing but soft or distilled water for the best coffee and cappuccino.

This is my first coffee/espresso machine. I like it very much and am very satisfied with it. Very easy to use, after you read the easy to follow instructions. Coffee does brew nice and hot, it also has an auto shut off that you can adjust. The espresso is nice, and I think the froth is very hot. I just had to learn how to properly froth. It looks very nice. Very simple to use.

Latissima problems solved
Date: 2008-11-01 | Rating: 5
I loved this machine from the first time I saw and tried it. However, I started having problems on day 2 - the milk wouldn't froth and it came out in spurts with a lot of water, not even filling 1/8 of the glass with milk. I took it back to Williams Sonoma and they cheerfully replaced it. It happened again to this new machine and, once again, I took it back for a replacement. (I had been in touch with Nespresso at all the junctures along the way and they replaced the milk jug and top twice.) When it happened on the third machine, I called the local Williams-Sonoma and asked if there was someone who could check out my machine. I am in the Danbury, CT area and Bill, at the local Williams-Sonoma, told me to leave it with him while I shopped and he would check it out. When I returned he told me it was frothing perfectly and then showed me how he set it up. It seems that I had not been pushing the jug connection tight enough. It has to click in. The lights had always been on and so I believed that the jug was connected correctly, but I was wrong. Not until I saw it being done and felt the connection, did I understand what I was doing wrong. Without being tightly connected it doesn't work correctly. Now I push until I hear a click and/or push it in a second time holding the back of the machine as I push, and have been making perfect lattes. I recommend this machine highly but think the documentation should be rewritten with this little bit of information in bold letters. I have seen many reviews of this machine from people who have had the same problem and hope that they found the solution as this machine is wonderful.

We ordered this from Amazon and received it a week ago. My wife and I are very happy with the machine. It is a great design, easy to use and clean, and makes great coffee. I highly recommend it. It's high priced but much cheaper than similar machines.

Awsome espresso

I saw this machine and tried a few samples of espresso with my family in the Nepresso store in Boston a month ago. I ordered it as soon as I returned from my trip. I think it produces a fantastic espresso and I like the convenience of the pods. I also own the Keurig machine and the Tassimo machine. Obviously I like the convenience of pod machines. I love the Keurig machine for regular coffee and iced coffee. The Tassimo machine can't compete with the Keurig machine for coffee. I bought it to make mostly cappuccinos and espresso with but it can't touch the Nespresso lattissima. The lattissima uses real milk not prepackaged condensed milk and the espresso the lattissima produces is far superior to anything the Tassimo produces. Hands down the Lattisima is a far superior machine. I have no problem with the milk frother and the temp of the milk on the Lattissima machine. After reading the others comments about the temperature I have always just run hot water through the frother first and made sure my cup was at least room temperature. My model has the cup warmer on top which I think is great. It keeps the cups warm all the time. I think the espressos and cappuccinos are plenty hot and so do my kids. We've only had it a couple of weeks but it gets used two to three times a day, some times more. I'm having a dinner party in two weeks and looking forward to be able to offer great espresso and cappuccino after dinner. It also makes great iced lattes. At this time I have no complaints about it. We love it!

good cap

i just finished three years living in rome and when everyone asked me what would i miss most, i said the cap and corn (that's a cappucino and a cornetto--croissant) which i had each morning. since i got the nespresso machine, i'm back to my cap and corn each morning. i really like the one touch cappucino maker although i do find that i have to use two capsules for one good sized cappucino. not a problem since there's no mess with this machine. just pop the capsule in and then empty the tray when you're done. i really like it and it is going to save me airfare back to rome several times a year just for a cup of coffee!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this machine!!!!!!!! We bought this machine because we wanted the ease of not messing with foaming the milk. It makes the most delicious latte, cappuccino, expresso!!!!! The coffee capsules are delicious! We haven't had a bad one yet. My only suggestion would be to get your cups hot with hot water before filling with your desired beverage! Very easy to use, but there are a few days of getting the perfect hang of it. Don't forget to get a little shaker for cinnamon or cocoa!! This is an addicting little machine. Oh, I have heard people complain about the little capsules not being recycleable, I just pop them in the sink and use a spoon to pull back the foil top and rinse them out and put them in the recyling bin...You won't be dissappointed this is an awesome little machine...We are packing ours up to take to FLORIDA this week with us...I don't know if I can live without it!!!

Amazon.com
It's easy to offer guests or family members a choice of drip coffee or an espresso drink with this combination coffee/espresso maker. The Caffé Nero has separate controls and water tanks for each function, so you can brew drip coffee and espresso simultaneously. The coffee side has a patented Flavor Savor brewing system that fully saturates grounds and lets them steep for a while to draw out rich coffee flavors. A permanent gold-tone filter keeps even the finest grounds from sneaking through to a coffee cup and eliminates the need for buying paper filters. Using the dial on the top of the coffeemaker, you can adjust the coffee's strength to personal preference. A separate button lets you choose between brewing 5 cups or less or from 6 to 10 cups and alters the heating element accordingly so smaller pots never taste burnt or overheated. The drip coffee side also has a 24-hour programmable timer that can be set each night to brew first thing in the morning and a "drip interrupt" feature, so you can pour a cup before the full pot is brewed. Coffee remains hot in the 10-cup glass carafe due to the Caffé Nero's nonstick warming plate. The espresso function starts up quickly without much advanced preparation and has two filter holders--one that uses ground espresso and another that uses coffee pods. The pod filter holder has a unique design that securely holds pods in place and makes disposal easy with a single touch of a button. The patented ground espresso filter improves upon the brewing process, which means espresso drinks always have a perfect crema. Cappuccino and latté lovers will be pleased with the exclusive chamber that mixes steam and milk into a delicious, creamy froth. The espresso maker has a stainless-steel boiler for durability and a removable spill tray for easy cleaning. DeLonghi offers a one-year limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for this two-in-one espresso/coffee machine. --Cristina Vaamonde

I'm in love...
Date: 2006-12-11 | Rating: 5
I purchased this in 2004 as a Christmas present for my boyfriend. Since then it has been used at least once daily and has been wonderful! After reading the other reviews I felt compelled to write a review because I work at a coffee bar and feel that I am uniquely qualified to write a response. Pros: First let me start with the coffee maker, this machine makes PHENOMINAL coffee!! Many people have not only complemented the flavor of the coffee but also the style of this machine, it's not stainless steel, but that doesn't mean that it looks cheap by any means. The gold tone filter is wonderful because you will never have to buy another coffee filter ever again. As far as filter maintenance is concerned, you do need to dump the used grounds into the garbage and rinse it out with water after every use, but that doesn't take more than a few seconds. I do clean the filter every month or so with dish detergent so that the coffee stays just as good as it was the first day of use. Another reviewer mentioned that the coffee didn't stop dripping when they pulled the coffee caraf out. All I can say to that is yes, the coffee will continue to drip until it's completely done brewing. We have never once had ANY problems like this with the machine. Now for the espresso side, I'm going to address a few concerns from other reviews. For starters it takes 5 minutes of preheating time before the machine is ready to brew the espresso NOT 30! At the coffee bar where I work, we only use espresso pods. Illy pods are only a few dollars more than their ground espresso and are deffinitely worth every single cent for not having to deal with grounds. When brewing the espresso on this machine I should mention that the water will not shut off on its own so it needs to be watched and measured while being brewed. Depending on the pod and whether it's a single or double will determine how many shots of espresso it is supposed to make. A single pod should be used for a single shot of espresso 1 1/2 oz. - 2oz.(1/4 cup). A double pod would be good for 3 oz. - 4 oz.(1/3-1/2 cup). We have not once had an issue with watered down espresso. If more water is used than that, then the espresso will be watered down, if using ground coffee beans instead of espresso beans, then it's not going to be as strong. Coffee and espresso are different in a few very important ways, trust me. Cons: Something to keep in mind if you have a minimal amount of counter space is that this machine is somewhat bigger than your average coffee maker. Something also worth mentioning is the steam arm, although it can be detatched from the machine to be cleaned, if it's not cleaned almost immediately I can see it being a HUGE pain in the neck to clean. Overall, we have been super happy with this machine and its quality. I bought it on ebay for $250 in October of 2004 and has been worth every single penny since then.

Great machine! I love it!

This truly was a great machine. I know that there were some negative reviews about this product, but for one month now, I have been using and loving this machine. Works great, couldn't ask for more! Thanks!

Delonghi BCO264B Combo Coffee Maker -- A Great Product
Date: 2009-01-12 | Rating: 5
Bought as a Christmas gift for my wife. It was very easy to set up and use, although we're still playing with the settings. I particularly like the ability to set the time that the pot stays hot -- it's preset at 2 hours, but can be easily changed to any length, including always on. The titanium filter is a nice idea -- does away with paper filters, and it cleans easily.

Simple but Effective

I had originally purchased the Krups version of their fanciest dual machine and it arrived non-functional with a display and buttons that were a little too "Star Trek" for me anyway...in fact, they didn't function at all. The Delonghi Caffe Nero (so far) has been very straighforward, easy to use, and produces good coffee and espresso. The quality of the coffee is moderate-high and I'm impressed with its strength selection system (a simple knob) and the mechanism by which it brews. No bells or whistles to confuse me. I did think initially that the permanent filter might be difficult to clean but not so far. However, the heat resistant coffee pot has an interesting design and a strange top which snaps on somewhat awkwardly and appears vulnerable to breaking but otherwise I have not found any major flaws with this machine as of yet. Good coffee, good espresso, easy to use, easy to program for the next day. We'll see...

great drip coffee, average espresso

The drip coffee is wonderful, but the espresso is weak. It seems like the pump does not generate enough pressure to make real, full bodied espresso. Overall, a satisfactory purchase.
